چکیده

A chordoma was examined by electron microscopy. It was composed of stellate and physaliphorous cells. The fine structure of these cells is described. Transitional type cells are also described and it is suggested that the physaliphorous cells develop from the stellate cells through a process of vacuolation. Two types of vacuoles are described, ;smooth-walled' and ;villous' endowed with numerous structureless microvilli. Some observations on stained sections are discussed.

Cytopathological dilemma of anaplastic sacral chordoma with radiological and histological corroboration.

Chordoma is a relatively rare locally invasive and potentially malignant tumor of fetal notochord origin, affecting the axial skeleton. Cytopathological diagnosis of chordoma is favored by the presence of characteristic physaliphorous cells, bearing abundant foamy cytoplasm dispersed in a myxoid matrix. Anaplastic chordoma or dedifferentiated chordoma, an even rarer variant, can cause a diagnos...

Cerebellar Metastasis from Extraosseous Chordoma of the Coccygeal Region: a case report

In this case report, we describe an extraosseous chordoma in the coccygeal region that later metastasized to the cerebellum. A 30-year-old man presented with a progressively enlarged lesion in the coccygeal region with painful sensation. Preoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large lobular mass in the coccygeal region without sacrococcygeal destruction. Patholo...

Histochemical and immunohistochemical characterization of chordoma in ferrets

Chordomas of the tip of the tail in 6 ferrets were examined using histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical procedures. Histopathologically, round neoplastic cells containing numerous cytoplasmic vacuoles of varying sizes, categorized as "physaliphorous cells", were observed in the amorphous eosinophilic or pale basophilic myxoid stroma. Physaliphorous cells were arranged in lobu...

Chordoma of the Lower Back in an Adolescent: A Rare Cytologic Presentation

Chordomas are low-grade malignant tumors of bone that occur almost exclusively in the axial  skeleton. Chordomas are rare in children and adolescents and comprise <5% of all cases and the  site of development is at the skull base. These tumors are believed to behave more aggressively  than chordomas in adults and may have unusual morphology. We herein present a rare case of chordoma in a 20-yea...

A Case of C5 Vertebral Chordoma in a 73-Year-Old Patient with More Than 8 Years of Follow-Up after Total Piecemeal Spondylectomy

Chordoma arising from the cervical spine is rare and the traditional long-term prognosis is typically poor. Total en bloc spondylectomy with a wide margin is generally accepted to be the most appropriate management for thoracic and lumbar malignant tumors. However, this method is still challenging for the cervical spine because of the proximity of the tumor to the vertebral arteries and neural ...
